Stage of learning
  • There are three phases of skill development from cognitive (where learning is by instruction and demonstration) to associative (where skills learned previously are integrated and patterns built) to autonomous (where performance becomes more automatic and routines are put into practice).
  • Less realisitc simulators are adequate for users in the cognitive phase.
  • More realistic task and mission flight simulation is most appropriate for users in the autonomous phase.
Type of task
  • The type of simulator required to teach a user to understand a flight principle or aircraft system is different from the type of simulator required to teach a user to demonstrate that learning and put that principle or system into practice.
Type of task analysis
  • Simulator technology and processes should be matched to desired learning goals, and not to technological development for its own sake.
